Lying at the cross roads of three continents, Turkish coasts, like its mainland were at the intersection of different cultures and sea trade routes. Several civilizations made their homes along these coasts and several ships made their last journeys as they sank in the four seas surrounding Turkey. It is no surprise that the first Underwater Archeological works in a scientific sense were launched in the world in early 1960’s along the Turkish coasts. Many discoveries made and archeological artifacts found later on, including the world’s oldest shipwrecks have become the true testaments of the diversity and richness of the underwater cultural heritage of Turkey. We attach utmost importance to this heritage, by striving to protect it and aiming to pass it on to next generations. That’s why we call these cultural treasures the Blue Heritage of Turkey.
